India has formally recognized 27 locations and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh on the Survey of India’s official map, strengthening its territorial claims amid ongoing infrastructure development along the India-China border. The Indian government’s decision is seen as a response to China’s claim that Arunachal Pradesh is part of China. The Home Ministry shared this information on Friday. The list includes strategic locations such as Longju, Maja, and Bissa; mountain passes such as Thag La, Zo La, Riza La, and Pukur La; the high-altitude lake Sambho Sarovar; and the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial. Home Ministry officials stated that the move is aimed at ensuring a proper and definitive recognition of Arunachal Pradesh and responding to China’s repeated attempts to rename places in the region. Analysis of satellite imagery by independent monitors shows that China is building roads, camps, and other infrastructure near Jari in the disputed area. The area where India is changing the names of 27 places falls under the Indian-administered territory under the McMohan Line, but it was under Chinese control since 1959. Both these developments highlight the ongoing dispute related to infrastructure and maps on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), on which India says that such attempts at changing names and construction work cannot change the reality on the ground.
Assam Floods: PM Modi Reviews Situation with MPs; MLAs Donate One Month’s Salary for Relief
Assam, a significant state in India, is once again reeling under severe flooding. Heavy rains have caused the floods, affecting 524,000 people and claiming 68 lives so far. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting with state MPs amid the dire flood situation in Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on Twitter, “Met with the MPs of Assam and discussed the current flood situation in various parts of the state. The central government is working closely with the Assam government to assist those affected. I wish everyone safety and well-being.” Assam’s MLAs have also taken a significant decision in light of the dire flood situation. All MLAs, except those from the Raijor Dal, announced on Tuesday that they would donate one month’s salary for the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims in the state. Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das said that he and Deputy Speaker Habbe Teron would donate one month’s salary for flood relief. He announced, “Apart from us, all employees of the Assembly Secretariat will donate one day’s salary for the relief and rehabilitation of the victims.” Welcoming the initiative, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika said that all BJP MLAs would also donate one month’s salary. Sherman Ali Ahmed, the lone Trinamool Congress MLA in the state, also followed suit and announced a month’s salary for the flood-affected areas.
Modi in France for Bilateral Talks, G7 Summit; Innovation, Defence and Technology Cooperation in Focus
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a six-day visit to France, starting today. He will participate in a bilateral visit and the G-7 Leaders’ Summit. He will be in Nice on June 13th and 14th, in Evian for the summit on June 16th and 17th, and in Paris on June 17th and 18th. This is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seventh visit to France since being sworn in as Prime Minister for the first time. This visit follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to India on February 17th–19th, when relations between the two countries were elevated to the status of a Special Global Strategic Partnership. France is considered one of India’s most favored partners in Europe, and this relationship, based on strategic support and mutual respect, has reached its peak over the past several decades. PM Modi will inaugurate the India Innovates 2020 program During his visit to France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the India Innovates 2020 program, along with Prime Minister Macron. This program will bring together the best innovation startups from India, France, and around the world. Held during the India-France Innovation Year, this program is expected to attract participation from over 120 Indian companies and startups, along with prominent business leaders from France and other countries. During this visit, PM Modi will also attend the WebTech Summit, Europe’s largest technology and startup event, in Paris on June 18. The Indian pavilion will be the largest this year. The G7 summit is also being capitalized on by US President Donald Trump’s participation, during which India will have the opportunity to reflect on issues affecting its security and economic interests. Defense: Defense cooperation between India and France is deep and wide-ranging, ranging from air and naval assets to helicopter engines and missiles. Some prominent examples of cooperation include the Rafale aircraft, Scorpene submarines, and Shakti helicopter engines. Space: In this area, ISRO and France’s national space agency, CNES, have a rich legacy of cooperation spanning six decades. Highlights include joint launches, the development of satellites such as Megha-Tropiques and SARAL, and cooperation on India’s human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan. The two countries are also considering another satellite mission, TRISHNA. Nuclear: The passage of the Sustainable Use and Development of Nuclear Energy to Transform India (SHANTI) Act has created a major opportunity for cooperation between Indian and French industries. Regarding Small Modular Reactors/Advanced Modular Reactors, India and France signed a Declaration of Intent for cooperation in this area in February 2025.
