Union Minister George Kurian, who served as Union Minister of State in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, has resigned from his post. President Draupadi Murmu, on the Prime Minister’s advice, has accepted his resignation with immediate effect. A press release issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan stated that, on the Prime Minister’s advice, the President of India has accepted George Kurian’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India with immediate effect. George Kurian also held the charge of Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. He was the only minister in the Modi government who belonged to the Christian community. His term in the Rajya Sabha ended on June 21. George Kurien was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh 65-year-old George Kurian has been associated with the BJP since the 1980s and is considered a senior leader within the party. After the BJP’s formation in 1980, he held several key positions within the organization, particularly working to expand the party in Kerala. After being active in the organization for a long time, he also assumed responsibilities at the national level. George Kurien was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh on August 27, 2024, and was included in the Union Council of Ministers in August 2024 during the third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kurien was given the responsibility of Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries. He was born on September 20, 1960, in Kottayam district, Kerala. Apart from politics, he has also practiced as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. He received his early education from Kottayam district and became a Union Minister in the Modi government in June 2024.

President Draupadi Murmu presented gallantry awards to brave soldiers at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 8, 2026. President Draupadi Murmu presented Gallantry Awards to personnel from the Armed Forces, CAPFs, and State and Union Territories for their valor, courage, and supreme dedication to duty. The President honored their supreme sacrifice and valor in defending the nation’s sovereignty by awarding a total of seven Kirti Chakras (two posthumously), 15 Vir Chakras (three posthumously), and 12 Shaurya Chakras (one posthumously). In the first phase of the ceremony, soldiers were honored with the second-highest peacetime gallantry award, the “Kirti Chakra,” and the prestigious wartime honor, the “Vir Chakra.” This year, a total of seven Kirti Chakras were awarded, of which two were posthumously awarded to brave soldiers. The families of the martyrs received the awards from the President. Also, 15 brave soldiers were awarded the Vir Chakra for their indomitable courage and for facing the enemies in war-like conditions, out of which three soldiers received this honour posthumously. In this ceremony, 29 Shaurya Chakras were also awarded by the President. Shaurya Chakra is the third highest peacetime gallantry award of the country, which is given for extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice in front of the enemies. President Draupadi Murmu presented the Padma Awards for the year 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 25. The Padma Awards are among the highest civilian honors in the country. Instituted in 1954, these awards are announced annually on Republic Day. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the President presented the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Shri awards at the first civilian investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This year, the Government of India announced a total of 113 Padma Awards. The first civilian investiture ceremony included 66 Padma Awards, including two Padma Vibhushans, six Padma Bhushans, and 58 Padma Shris. The remaining Padma Awards will be presented in the second phase of the ceremony to be held later. Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among other dignitaries, were present at the ceremony.
