India Tightens IT Rules to Combat Deepfakes and Protect Online Privacy
The Indian government has implemented strict IT regulations to curb the rise of fake content, deepfake videos, and misuse of personal content on digital platforms. The primary objective of these regulations is to protect people’s privacy, dignity, and online security. In many cases, fake videos and photos have been circulated targeting women, artists, journalists, and public figures. The government believes this not only violates privacy but can also become a means of spreading confusion, rumors, and mistrust in society. These rules also require social media companies to establish grievance redressal mechanisms and appoint compliance officers in India. If a platform fails to take timely action, legal action can be taken against it. The government is continuously pressuring tech companies to use improved AI detection systems and moderation techniques to quickly identify fake and harmful content. The Indian government aims to create a safe and responsible digital environment, where freedom of expression is maintained but cannot be misused to harm anyone’s image, privacy, or security. Therefore, IT regulations are constantly being strengthened and updated to meet modern technology.
