A crucial meeting of the opposition alliance INDIA was held today (September 30, 2026) at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, the capital of the country. Twenty-three political parties are participating in the meeting. The meeting was convened to formulate a common strategy regarding the functioning of the Election Commission, the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, and the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Opposition leaders are expected to discuss their strategy for demanding action against the SIR and the Chief Election Commissioner.

Several prominent opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, attended the meeting. This mega meeting was primarily organized at the initiative of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. From the TMC, Mamata Banerjee was joined by party National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee and senior MP Saugata Roy. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, National Conference’s Omar Abdullah, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, and several Left leaders are also present.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav did not attend the I.N.D.I.A. Alliance meeting at the Constitution Club due to other commitments (farmers’ convention). However, Arvind Kejriwal met with Mamata Banerjee just before the meeting.

Opposition parties are preparing a joint action plan to protest allegations of vote theft and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Additionally, a draft motion is being discussed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

At the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded the use of pre-SIR voter lists in the upcoming elections and the use of ballot papers instead of EVMs. He said the alliance would demand complete transparency in the electoral process and work together to achieve this.
